Unable to change port-group of VM. 'A general system error occurred: vDS host error' is seen in vCenter.

Issue/Introduction

  • VM is connected to standard port-group. Error 'A general system error occurred: vDS host error' is seen when the VM is connected to any distributed port-group.
  • vCenter tasks shows following error -
    Cannot create DVPort #### of VDS <switch-name> on the host <hostname>
    fault. DvsApplyOperationFault.summary
    An error occurred during host configuration

  • In hostd logs we can see error that dvport is not saved.
    /var/run/log/hostd.log
    warning hostd[2101151] [Originator@6876 sub=Hostsvc.NetworkProvider opID=m6azrm7k-####-auto-nyrk-h5:####9825-##-##-ca-ac67 user=vpxuser:VSPHERE.LOCAL\Administrator] Skip saving  dvport DSwitch_####-#### to /vmfs/volumes/32f2####-####aa7d/.dvsData/50 ## ## f6 09 ## ## 57-c8 98 0d bf a4 ## ## 0a/1297: failed to create dir
  • Storage vMotion fixes the issue.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi

Cause

Log 'failed to create dir' indicates issue with datastore.

Resolution

This can happen because of underlying storage issue. Check datastore for any issue.

Workaround -
Storage vMotion of affected VM.
