Cause

The vmwarelwd I/O filter, a Lightweight Delta (LWD) filter, is used by VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery (VCDR) and other data protection solutions to enable snapshot-based backups with minimal downtime for VMFS datastores. 

This can be caused by settings running on backup solutions such as Dell PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM) or VMs with IO Filter applied.

Resolution

This may require troubleshooting VMs that are running on backup solutions such as Dell PowerProtect Data Manager (PPDM) and adjusting IO Filters.

If there are multiple instances of the LWD filter, the script referenced in KB344906  (lwd-cleanup-util.py) can be used to remove it from the affected VMs.   

 

 

Additional Information

Putting ESXi into Maintenance mode, vMotioning or reconfiguring a VM fails due to the vmwarelwd ioFilter being attached
