Issue/Introduction

  • A warning stating Device is Incompatible with Driver/Firmware in Cluster’s Image appears under:

vSphere Inventory > Cluster > Updates.
  • The cluster is vSAN-enabled, and the device in question is identified as the vSAN debug controller. This can also be verified by running the command on any one ESXi host - esxcli vsan debug controller list
  • The warning impacts image compliance and prevents successful remediation

Validation Steps:

  • Validate if the vsan debug controller in use is listed as supported in the VSAN compatibility guide.
  • In this case, the controller in use is 'Micron Technology Inc 7450 PRO NVMe SSD'. When filtering by the following identifiers in the vSAN I/O Controller Compatibility Guide:

  VID: 1344
 DID: 51c3
 SVID: 1344
 SSID: 4000

Environment

VMware VSAN 7.x

VMware VSAN 8.x

Cause

The device currently being used as the vSAN debug controller is not listed under the vSAN I/O Controller section in the official vSAN Compatibility Guide. As a result, vSphere identifies this hardware as unsupported for vSAN use and triggers the warning: “Device is Incompatible with Driver/Firmware in Cluster’s Image” in the Updates tab.

Resolution

Engage your hardware vendor and validate if the drivers are supported for vSAN use. If the vendor confirms that the driver is supported for VSAN use and the details will be added to the Broadcom Compatibility Guide in an upcoming update, you can silence the alert for the VSAN cluster and proceed with host remediation.

To silence the alert navigate to Cluster > Monitor > VSAN > Skyline Health and silence the 'SCSI controller is VMware certified' alert
