We have found that some devices have an Alias Name and some do not. Portal uses the IP as the Host Name and the Alias Name. How come?
Generally it is due to the type of device. For instance, Pingables do not have SysName.
Portal will use SysName and/or DNS to determine the Alias. If the sysname is not configured or there is no entry in DNS, then etc/hosts can be used. This is usually more of an issue with Pingables and/or Access Points as SNMP capable devices will usually have a SysName for Portal to use.
Outside of sysname, DNS, etc/hosts, there is no discovery mechanism in Portal to discover Alias. This needs to be set manually. This can be done per model in Portal, or this can be done via script:

Alias cannot be populated from VNA or Spectrum.
