This article describes the best practices when performing an SFP module replacement for ESXi hosts which are part of a vSAN cluster.
VMware vSAN 7.x
VMware vSAN 8.x
To perform the SFP module replacement follow the below steps:
Ensure that there is no resync on the vSAN cluster before proceeding with the next steps. Select vSAN Cluster > Monitor > Resync objects to verify the same.
Also ensure that vSAN Skyline Health reports the vSAN cluster to be healthy.
Place 1 host in maintenance mode with ensure accessibility or full data migration.
Once the host is in maintenance mode, perform the SFP module replacement on this host.
Once done, verify that vSAN Skyline Health is all good. Select vSAN cluster > Monitor > vSAN Skyline Health > Click "Retest". Verify that the network related health checks are all green and there is no cluster partition.
Once verified that the cluster is good, proceed to exit the host out of maintenance mode.
There will be a little resync that gets triggered to sync up the vSAN objects, wait for it to complete before proceeding with steps 1 to 6 for the remaining vSAN hosts in the cluster.
