Issue/Introduction

An attempt to license a vSAN Cluster returns error 'The license capacity is insufficient'

Environment

vSAN 8.x

Cause

The purchased license capacity needs to be greater than or equal to the size of the datastore.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, you must ask your reseller/sales representative to issue another license with the same Term End Date. The capacity of the new license should cover the remaining capacity of the vSAN Datastore. The licenses may then be combined to the required capacity.
The resulting license key can then be used to license the vSAN Cluster.

In this example, we may see:
Existing license Capacity - 12TB
Term License End Date: 02/26/2028

Reseller/Sales Representative should provide a new license of 52TB with End of date of 02/26/2028.
Once the license is issued, you may combine the 12TB with the 52TB license for the resulting capacity to be 64TB. If date for the second 52TB is different, we can't combine the licenses.
Once the licenses are combined, you may use the resulting 64TB license to successfully license the vSAN Cluster.
