Unrecoverable media errors detected after patched vulnerability VMSA-2025-0004

Issue/Introduction

• ESXi host patched the vulnerability VMSA-2025-0004.
• After patching the hardware management interface  (e.g HPE iLO, Dell iDRAC) prompts below alert messages:

Error: 1716-Slot 0 Drive Array - Unrecoverable Media Errors Detected on Drives during previous Rebuild or Background Surface scan. Errors will be corrected when the sector(s) are overwritten.

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x

Cause

These alerts appear during background surface scans on unrecoverable media errors in fault tolerant RAID 1, 10, ADM, 5, 50, 6, 60. Resolution

Contact host hardware vendor to check the drive array.
