VMware SDDC Manager

Issue/Introduction

When attempting to expand an NSX Edge Cluster using the VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) SDDC Manager UI, the workflow fails with the following error:

EDGE_CLUSTER_INCORRECT_UPLINK_PG_COUNT Expected two different uplink port groups for Edge node EDGE-FQDN, but found dvportgroup-1, dvportgroup-2, dvportgroup-3

This error can be observed in the /var/log/vmware/vcf/domainmanager/domainmanager.log file:

YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS ERROR [vcf_dm,c9afc40598dcd49d,35df] [c.v.e.s.o.model.error.ErrorFactory,dm-exec-20] [L5621I] EDGE_CLUSTER_INCORRECT_UPLINK_PG_COUNT Expected two different uplink port groups for Edge node EDGE-FQDN, but found dvportgroup-1, dvportgroup-2, dvportgroup-3 com.vmware.evo.sddc.orchestrator.exceptions.OrchTaskException: Expected two different uplink port groups for Edge node EDGE-FQDN, but found dvportgroup-1, dvportgroup-2, dvportgroup-3 at com.vmware.vcf.nsxtedgeclustermanager.fsm.actions.EdgeClusterExpansionComplianceCheckAction.exe

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 4.5.x

NSX-T

Cause

This issue occurs when an additional uplink port group is added to an NSX Edge node outside of the SDDC Manager UI, for example, directly through the NSX-T Manager.

SDDC Manager expects exactly two uplink port groups for each Edge node. If more than two are present, the Edge Cluster expansion compliance check fails during the workflow.

Resolution

The only resolution at this time is to remove the additional portgroup from the edge prior to attempting the expansion workflow again through SDDC.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Log in to NSX-T Manager.

  2. Identify the Edge node referenced in the error message (EDGE-FQDN).

  3. Remove the additional uplink port group(s) so that only two uplink port groups remain.

  4. Once corrected, re-initiate the Edge Cluster expansion from the SDDC Manager UI.

Important: All configuration changes related to Edge nodes and their uplinks should be performed through the SDDC Manager UI to ensure proper compliance with VCF workflows.

Additional Information

  • Modifying NSX configurations outside of the SDDC Manager UI can lead to workflow failures and unsupported configurations in VCF-managed environments.

  • Always validate edge cluster configuration compliance before initiating workflows.
