Issue/Introduction

  • When trying to patch the ESXi host using baselines, it fails with error "An error occurred during host configuration: /usr/sbin/esxupdate returned with exit status: 99. Kindly raise call with vmware".
  • When using the CLI method of update, the patch installs successfully on the host without any issues.
  • From the /var/run/log/esxupdate.log, it is observed that there are two NSX vibs of the same version but different release dates causing metadata conflict.
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ Er(11) esxupdate[78474553]: vmware. esximage. Errors. ReleaseUnitConflictError: ('com. vmware.nsxt_3.2.1.2.0-20541214', 'solution', "Two solutions share the same releaseID: com. vmware.nsxt_3.2.1.2.0-20541214, but have different attributes: componentConstraints ('' != '' ), releaseDate ('2022-09-28 16:40:02.571277' != '2022-09-28 16:34:01.114841' )" )

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x
VMware vCenter Server 7.x
VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Cause

The /var/run/log/esxpdate.log indicates that the ESXi VIB installation failed due to a metadata conflict, as two VIBs of the same version but with different release dates were present.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, please perform a VMware Update Manager Database Reset on the vCenter Server to clean up the corruption in the database.
