JARS SMF Director

Issue/Introduction

After installing maintenance noticed that the SMFD had missing INDEX records.
A review of the Catalog and Tape Volume information sees the SMF dumps have been completed and collected correctly.
Just the SMFD has missing INDEX data.

Environment

SMF Director R12.7

Cause

Errors during maintenance upgrade.  Required to offload SMF data using IFASMFDP until the problem was resolved.
Only the SMFD Index records are missing for 10 files in this instance (Fileseq 1,2,5,6,7,8,9,11,12,13)

Resolution

Need to ensure the Tape Management Catalog (TMC) and the z/OS catalog contain the correct information for the files missing from the SMFD Index.

  1. Run a TAPEINIT to force a new volume.
  2. Take a BACKUP of the SCDS.
  3. If you have any discrepancies in the SCDS, remove the bad entries using the DELETEX control statement. Delete only the bad entries.
  4. Once the bad entries are removed, examine the TMS report and find all of the SMF files in it that were removed from the SCDS.  They're going to be re-read into the SMFD Archive with the SOURCE Control Statement.
To do this, take a copy of a typical DUMP JCL and add in a DD statement for the file that needs to be replaced.
The DD Name can be anything but will use SMFIN for this example.
SMFIN DD DSN=smf.filename.on.tape,DISP=SHR  <= or catalog and volume information if not in the z/OS catalog.
The control statements in SYSIN should read:

    SOURCE DUMP(SMFIN) .
    DUMP.

The SOURCE statement tells SMFD that the input data is coming in from a file and not from the MAN files.

  5. Repeat this step for all of the files that are on the tape but are missing (or were removed)  from the index for the discrepancy.
  6. Take another BACKUP of the SCDS.

Additional Information

TAPEINIT is recommended so that the next SMFD dump that runs will write to a new volume.  You cannot write to/read from a tape volume at the same time.  So this ensures the SOURCE DUMP and regular DUMP jobs will not conflict with one another.
