Failed to save vSphere Lifecycle Manager image for cluster with error 'Image is invalid'

Issue/Introduction

• Cluster managed with vSphere Lifecycle Manager image.
• Edit and save the image under the Updates tab of the cluster fails with an error message:
  
  A general system error occurred: Unable to create desired state specification : Addon <addon-version> is incompatible with base image version <image-version>. Image is invalid. Unable to associate an invalid image with the cluster.

 

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.0.x

Cause

The ESXi version and the vendor Addon version are incompatible in the image. For example, ESXi version 8.0 U3 is selected but vendor Addon version 7.0 U3 is selected.

 

Resolution

• Contact Addon vendor about the Addon compatibility with ESXi version.
• Select the compatible versions between ESXi and Addon in the image.
