Unable to upgrade vSphere Replication or Site Recovery Manager from 8.7 to 8.8 (Failed with exit code 5376)

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • Upgrade fails to update RPM packages files from Photon 3.0 to 4.0.

  • In /var/log/vmware/vami/updatecli.log of vSphere Replication (or Site Recovery Manager), following error is reported:

    1. package zlib-devel-1.2.11-5.ph3.x86_64 requires zlib = 1.2.11-5.ph3, but none of the providers can be installed
    2. package util-1inux-devel-2.32.1-5.ph3.x86_64 requires util-linux - 2.32.1-5.ph3, but none of the providers can be installed

    Found 2 problem(s) while resolving
    Error (1301) : Solv general runtime error

Environment

VMware vSphere Replication 8.7

Cause

  • These RPM packages are outdated and were present up until Photon 3 but have been removed in Photon 4.
  • New version of Photon do not have reference to below files hence the upgrade fails.

    util-linux = 2.32.1-5.ph3
    zlib = 1.2.11-5.ph3

Resolution

  • The issue is resolved on upgrading 8.7 version (vSphere Replication or Site Recovery Manager) to version 8.8.0.3 (build 23263438) instead of using any previous 8.8 versions.

  • Version 8.8.0.3 will automatically uninstall these old/stale RPM packages and complete the upgrade.

  • During mounting of the 8.8.0.3, if the image fails to load and goes in loop with error " Failed to retrieve update" follow steps provided in the following article:
