Error: An error occurred while taking a snapshot: Unable to open the snapshot file

Issue/Introduction

When trying to take a snapshot of a VM that is on a vvol you might get an error as per Title.

Looking at the vmkernal logs you will see message similar to this:

 [rt 1] No Space - did not find enough resources after second pass!

Resolution

In order to work around this issue:

• Check the size of vmware.log file
• If it is bigger in size and not rotating, delete the file and create a new one
• Move the VM to another vvol volume and back to the original vvol volume by doing storage vmotion
