• Symptoms:

VM fails to power on with the error:

Operation failed

Task name: Power On virtual machine

Target: <VM_Name>

Status: License key has expired

         

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x

Cause

This issue caused by an invalid or expired license assigned to the ESXi host.

Resolution

Verify the ESXi host License:

• Check if the ESXi host is assigned a valid license.

• If the license is found to be invalid or expired, assign a valid license and attempt to power on the VM.
