Issue/Introduction

This article explains the File Service Error found in vSAN Skyline Health and provides details on why it might report an error.

Symptoms :

Error message "File Service is comparatively overloaded on this host" will be displayed in Skyline Health in vSAN cluster  ( Host and Cluster View > Monitor  > Skyline Health

Validation:

  • The SMB / NFS ownership can be checked by Host and Cluster view > vSAN Cluster > Configure > File Shares > Select File Share and check Basics where it will display the name of the owner ESXI host and respective FSVM

Environment

VMware vSAN 8.0.x
VMware vSAN 7.0.x

Cause

The issue is caused by the imbalance of the SMB or NFS share across the FSVM across ESXI hosts

The vSAN cluster may contain multiple SMB/NFS shares, which could be running on a single ESXi host or only a few of them which can cause imbalance

Resolution

  • Verify that the vSAN cluster is healthy and all checks are green in Skyline Health
  • Following remediation action can be taken during non production hours

Host and Cluster View > Monitor  > Skyline Health > Infrastructure Health > Troubleshooting  > Remediate Imbalance

  • After  the "REBALANCE" button is clicked , a rebalance operation will be triggered and it should distribute the workload of the respective SMB / NFS across nodes in vSAN cluster nodes.

Note : During the rebalance,  I/O is disrupted to SMB shares located in containers that have moved. Workload running on NFS shares are not disrupted. The rebalance can take up to 30 minutes depending on cluster size. Schedule a maintenance window if necessary
