Deploy vSAN Snapshot Service Appliance for vSAN Data Protection

Issue/Introduction

This article provides steps to enable vSAN Data Protection 

Environment

vSAN 8.0.x Express Storage Architecture (ESA) 

Resolution

1. Download the VMware vSAN Snapshot Service Appliance from the Broadcom website at https://support.broadcom.com/group/ecx/downloads:

    1. In "My Downloads" page, select "VMware" for "Division"
    2. Type in "vSphere" in the "Search Product Name" dialog box
    3. Select "VMware vSphere" from the search results
    4. Select the vSphere entitlement 
    5. Under Release Select 8.0
    6. Click on "Drivers and Tools"
    7. Download "VMware vSAN Snapshot Service Appliance"

2. Right-click the vSAN cluster in the vSphere Client, and select Deploy OVF Template to open the wizard.
3. On the Select an OVF template page, specify the location of the appliance OVA file and click Next.
4. On the Select a name and folder page, you can enter a unique name for the appliance, select your data center as the deployment location.
5. On the Select a compute resource page, select the vSAN cluster as the compute resource.
6. On the Select storage page, select a datastore.
7. On the Select networks page, select the same network as the vCenter, and click Next.
8. On the Customize template page fill in the below details:

For  "Application": 

Note:  Hostname = Full FQDN (Short name is not supported)

- Initial Root Password =

For "Networking Setting"

- Host Network IP Address Family = (IPV4 or IPV6)
- Default Gateway =
- Domain Name = 
- Domain Search Path
- Domain name Server =
- Network IP Address =
- Network IP Profile = (e.g. 24)

For "vCenter Server Configuration" 

- vCenter Server Hostname  = Full FQDN (Short name is not supported)
- Administrator Username =
- Administrator Password =
- vCenter Server Certificate = enter the certificate text example  ---BEGIN CERTIFICATE--- | ---END CERTIFICATE---

- vCenter Single Sing-On Domain =

Please Note: This appliance requires a trusted vCenter Server certificate:

  1. From the vCenter home page, click Download trusted root CA certificates. 
  2. For detailed instructions, refer to the following KB article:

Please Note: vSAN Snapshot Service is only supported by vSAN Express Storage Architecture (ESA) but not by vSAN Original Storage Architecture (OSA).



 

 

 

Additional Information

vSAN Data Protection requires the Snapshot Service appliance to manage vSAN snapshots. After you deploy the appliance, vSAN Data Protection becomes visible in the vSphere Client.
