The following Knowledge Base article is a collection of FAQs for the Custom Views feature in Rally.
1. Where can I find custom views?
You can access Custom Views from the Reports tab in the navigation menu.
This page contains a list of all the Custom Views that are available to you and your private Custom Views.
To create a new Custom View, click the Add New button at the top of the grid.
2. Can I run app catalog apps or my custom apps in Custom Views?
Legacy apps that use the App SDK or Mashup toolkits do not work with the Custom HTML Widget because of the outdated technology that those tools are built on.
This includes all apps in the App Catalog.
If you have HTML and javascript that is not built on the AppSDK, then you may be able to run that in a custom view.
See the Custom HTML widget documentation for available context options with the Custom HTML Widget.
3. How can I write queries?
Many widgets have query boxes to enable filtering of the datasets in the views. The query boxes use the Rally Query language.a
For more information about build queries, see the following topics:
Query Syntax
Also, if the Vaia Help bot is enabled for your subscription, you can get help to write a particular query to get started.
4. Can I share custom views?
Yes. When created, all Custom Views are Private.
After saving the Custom View, it can be shared with one to many projects (same as Legacy Custom Pages) if a user has minimum Project Admin permissions for each project the view is shared with.
Anyone with Project Admin permissions can edit a shared Custom View (same as Legacy Custom Pages).
5. How are Custom Views scoped?
By default, Custom Views follow the page scoping.
Each individual widget can be scoped to a single project independent of the navigation scope.
Currently, widgets can only be pinned to one project as opposed to a hierarchy or cherry picked list (like Legacy Custom Pages)
6. Can I pin a custom view to a menu?
Custom Views are currently accessed using the Custom Views page and not yet able to be pinned to the navigation menu.
7. Will my dashboards automatically migrate over to Custom Views?
No, not at this time. Rally will be coming out with cookbooks to help build more efficient and streamlined pages for common dashboard scenarios.
8. How many widgets can I put on a custom view?
Custom Views are limited to 5 Sections. Each section can contain anywhere from 1 (full width) to 4 (25% width) widgets. Therefore, the maximum number of widgets that can currently be placed on a custom view is 20.
9. Are there any restrictions for which widgets can be added to a particular form factor (e.g. 25%, 33% width)?
With the exception of the Custom List, which requires a minimum of 50% width, all widgets can be placed in any form factor.
10. Can I build my own widgets?
Yes! The HTML widget provides a way to use HTML and Javascript to build a widget. While we are still working to add more features to the HTML widget, you can find information to get started here.
11. How do I see which widgets are available to me?
You can find the available widgets in the documentation, or by creating a custom view and adding a widget.
12. I don’t see what I need to make a custom view to meet my requirements. What are my options?
Please share your feedback using the Share My Feedback menu item in the Rally Help menu or get in touch with your Sales representative to set up a call with us! We are continuing to invest in Custom View functionality and new widgets and want your feedback to help us bring you the most value.
