Issue/Introduction

Replication fails in VMware Cloud Director Availability due to hardware incompatibility.

These errors typically arise when the source and target hosts have incompatible hardware configurations, which can prevent successful replication or migration of virtual machines.

You may encounter errors similar to the below::

  • Operation aborted due to an unexpected error.
  • VM hardware version "N" is not supported by destination host.
  • Unable to connect to vCenter server.
  • Failed to create replica due to hardware incompatibility.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 4.x

Cause

This error occurs when a virtual machine’s hardware version is not supported on the target host due to hardware differences. The source host may have a more recent hardware version, while the target host has older hardware capabilities that cannot support it.

Resolution

  • Ensure both source and destination hosts are managed by the same vCenter server and have compatible storage configurations.
  • Verify that the hardware versions of both hosts are compatible with vSphere and replication requirements.
  • Use Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) to make CPUs appear compatible across hosts, particularly when using CPUs from different generations.
  • Check for any hardware feature mismatches, particularly with CPU, memory, and storage adapters.
