Issue/Introduction

The Remote Diagnostics provides an option to change the traffic path for all cloud (Internet) traffic in an SD-WAN Edge

Some times customers use this option to troubleshoot issues but do not understand the consequences and they might leave one of the non-default options set, which is undesirable for the optimal traffic steering and application performance

This KB explains the options available and what is the expected result in each case. The options are shown in the image below and explained in more details

  • Route per Business Policy (default): This is the default option in which the traffic is matched and steered based on the Action set in the Business policies configured for the edge. Traffic will be steered either via Direct to the ISP or Multipath (via Gateway)

  • Always use Gateway Service: All traffic traversing the edge will be steered Multipath regardless of the Business policy the traffic is matching and its corresponding steering setting. This could potentially create performance issues especially when the edge have high bandwidth links and all this traffic is sent via Gateway which is a shared resource

  • Never use Gateway Service: All traffic traversing the edge will be steered Direct regardless of the Business policy the traffic is matching and its corresponding steering setting. This setting will effectively bypass the Gateway and all remediation techniques, peer packet steering and path enhancements provided by the VCMP protocol

Note the settings set using this option are not permanent, meaning if one of the non-default options is set, this setting will stay applied as long as the edge is not rebooted. If the edge is rebooted the setting will go back to the default option (Route per Business Policy)

In order to find whether this action might have been set by mistake the Events can be searched based on the event type "QoS override. An example is provided below
