VMware Tanzu Mission Control

Issue/Introduction

Users are unable to see backups in the VMware Tanzu Mission Control (TMC) UI under the Data Protection tab for certain clusters. Although backups are being created successfully—as verified via CLI, logs, and storage backends—they do not appear in the TMC UI. This issue may affect one or multiple clusters.

Environment

VMware Tanzu Mission Control

Cause

The TMC sync-agent pod is responsible for syncing cluster metadata—including backup job status—to TMC. If this component is unhealthy or loses connectivity, the UI may not reflect the actual backup state, even if backups are occurring as scheduled.

Resolution

Restart the tmc-sync-agent pod on each affected cluster to restore sync functionality:

  1. Identify the namespace where the sync agent is running (commonly vmware-system-tmc):
    • kubectl get pods -A | grep sync-agent
  2. Delete the sync agent pod to trigger a restart:
    • kubectl delete pod <sync-agent-xxx> -n <tmc namspace>
  3. Wait a few minutes and refresh the TMC UI. Backups should now be visible under the Data Protection tab.

If backups still do not appear:

  • Confirm the pod restarted successfully and is in a healthy state.
  • Check network connectivity between the cluster and the TMC control plane.
  • Review any proxy or firewall rules that might block communication.
