Issue/Introduction

  • Adding a Domain Name (FQDN) attribute to a Network Context Profile for an Edge Gateway in VMware Cloud Director (VCD) fails with an error similar to:

[ ########-####-####-####-########5498 ] Bad Request: Error occurred in the backing network provider: Invalid attribute value: *.example.com for key: DOMAIN_NAME. Please invoke API https://<ip>/policy/api/v1/infra/context-profiles/attributes to get the list of valid attributes and sub-attributes., error code 521006

  • Network Context Profiles cannot be configured for use with FQDN based firewall rules.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.x

Cause

This behaviour occurs when the FQDN being entered has not been added as an attribute in NSX first.

Resolution

VMware Cloud Director currently does not have the capability to create new attributes for use by Network Context Profiles. Attributes must be added in NSX before they can be used in VMware Cloud Director.

For information on how to add an FQDN attribute in NSX, see the FQDNs section of the VMware NSX documentation.
