Windows VM Auto Shutdown Every 1 Hour

Issue/Introduction

A Windows virtual machine (VM) is experiencing an automatic shutdown every 1 hour.

Environment

Windows server 2016, 2019, and 2022.

Cause

Windows will automatically shut down if its license expires because Microsoft has a built-in mechanism to enforce license compliance after the trial period (usually 180 days).

Event logs:

Resolution

• Log in to the Windows VM.

• Check the license status of the operating system.

• If the license has expired, apply a valid license key to activate the Windows OS.
