Error: “The object or item referred to could not be found. The specified object /XX_template/VirtualIDEControllerX:X could not be found.” when deploying OVF package

Issue/Introduction

• The template deployment from the content library failed with the following error:
  Task Name: Deploy OVF package from Content Library to Resource Pool
    Status: Failed to deploy OVF package, ThrowableProxy.cause The object or item referred to could not be found. The specified object /####/VirtualIDEController#:# could not be found.

Environment

• vCenter server 7.x
• vCenter server 8.x
• VMware Cloud Director 10.5

Cause

 

• The issue was caused by a CD-ROM attached to the template with a null ISO value. Upon reviewing the VM configuration, it was found that a datastore ISO file was attached under "Edit Settings," but the datastore ISO value appeared as "[]" of the VM from which the template was created. This suggests that the ISO file was either moved or deleted from the datastore.

Resolution

Solution Recommendation:

1. Changed the CD device configuration from Datastore ISO File to Client Device under "Edit Settings" and saved the changes.
2. Created a new template with the updated VM configuration.
3. Moved the template to the content library and synchronized the content library.
4. Successfully deployed the updated template without issues.

By removing this configuration, the deployment process was able to complete successfully.
