VMware vSAN VCF Operations

Issue/Introduction

The performance diagnostic scan on the cluster, among other results, shows a diagnostic finding that says “Not enough data to run certain checks”.

Environment

VCF Operations 9.0

VSAN 9.0

Cause

This finding is shown when one or more metrics that the diagnostic engine requires to run a full scan are missing. A scan queries and applies checks across several vSAN performance metrics.

Resolution

There are several reasons why metrics could be missing

  • Issues with the vSAN Adapter
  • Active policy configuration

Issues with vSAN Adapter

Detailed documentation about how to configure and troubleshoot vSAN data collection is outlined in the following:

Active policy configuration

VMware Aria Operations allows users to configure new or modify existing policies. Policies allow users to conditionally disable collection of certain metrics. To check if the policy in use has metrics disabled, follow the following steps:

  1. From the left menu, click Infrastructure Operations > Configurations > Policies > Policy Definition.
  2. Find the policy that has the ‘Active’ status. Click on that.
  3. The right side pane will now show all the policy properties. Find the property named ‘Metrics and Properties’ and expand it.
  4. If there are any vSAN metrics that have been disabled, they will be shown like this

If there are any metrics that are required by the vSAN performance diagnostics service and are disabled, please enable them, wait for a few data collection cycles to complete and re-run the diagnostics scan. When re-running the scan, please ensure the time window selected has the required metrics’ collection enabled.

NOTE 1: The default policy that is shipped with the product has all metrics required for vSAN Performance Diagnostics enabled. Please check with your system administrator before making any changes to the active policy properties.

NOTE 2: Enabling collection for a deactivated metric doesn’t fetch historical data. ONLY new values will be collected.
