Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • The vSphere Client is flooded with error messages: Update option values: A general system error occurred: Internal error message

  • A syslog configuration is applied on the affected host(s). One very common example is a vRealize Log Insight implementation on a VCF environment.

  • ESXi logs contains errors similar to the excerpt below:

    /var/log/hostd.log
    [Originator@6876 sub=Hostsvc.SyslogConfigProvider opID=101d0a8-2f-0cb2 sid=52e2a97b user=vpxuser:domain\user] Failed to set global syslog configuration : Failed to resolve remote host hostname.domain.com.

    --> (vmodl.fault.SystemError) {
    -->    reason = "Internal error",
    -->    msg = "",

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation
VMware vSphere ESXi
VMware vCenter Server

Cause

Issue is related with an incorrect DNS resolution of the configured syslog server on the affected host(s).
