Hot standby link configuration behaviour

Issue/Introduction

In a corner case scenario, the customer may experience an issue where the edge hot standby link does not come up when the edge active WAN link encounters packet loss or a tunnel flap with the primary gateway.

Environment

VMware SDWAN Edge/Gateway

Cause

If the tunnel to other gateways (secondary/super) remains stable on the active WAN link interface, and as long as the active WAN link tunnel count is not less than the minimum configured threshold, the hot standby link will not transition from "hotstandby_idle" to "hotstandby_up."

Resolution

As this is the default behavior, the customer can use a workaround by performing a service restart on the edge device to transition the hot standby link from "hotstandby_idle" to "hotstandby_up."
