When applying License to ESXi Host / Adding Host to vCenter -- "The license does not support DRS in Maintenance Mode" / "Some features will become unavailable"

Issue/Introduction

One or more of the following messages are observed:

  • A Warning message "Some features will become unavailable" is shown when applying a License to ESXi Host
  • "The license does not support DRS in Maintenance Mode" message is shown when clicking on "Details"
  • Under Tasks you observe the error: "License not available to perform the operation...... The License for ..... does not include "vSphere DRS". Upgrade the license"
  • When adding a vSAN Witness Host to vCenter you observe the error  "License not available to perform the operation"

Cause

These Warning messages appear if the License doesn't have the feature "DRS in Maintenance mode".
This feature can automatically migrate Virtual Machines to another Host when attempting to put a Host in Maintenance Mode.
 
In situations where one or more of the listed messages above show up when adding a vSAN Witness Host to vCenter:
This is per Design. These messages can be ignored.
Reason:
A vSAN Witness Host cannot host Virtual Machines since it is used exclusively to store Witness Components of a vSAN Cluster.
As a result, the embedded Witness License does not have the feature "DRS in Maintenance mode".
 

Resolution

The messages can be ignored if the License have "vSphere DRS" feature.
The messages can be ignored when adding a vSAN Witness Host to vCenter.
