Issue/Introduction

Guidance on manually failing over Tier-0 or Tier-1 gateways.

Environment

VMware NSX-T

VMware NSX

Resolution

  • Configure the gateway to be preemptive and set the Preferred Edge.
  • Identify the Edge node currently hosting the active SR and place it into maintenance mode.
  • Bring down all BGP/OSPF sessions for the active Tier-0 gateway.
    • This process will trigger a failover of the Tier-0 gateway only; Tier-1 gateways residing on the same Edge node will remain unaffected and will not fail over.

Additional Information

The NSX Reference Design Guide outlines additional conditions that can trigger a failover.
