Unlock the root account in Aria Automation Appliance 8.x

Issue/Introduction

Starting Aria Automation 8.17.x, Photon OS 4 has been introduced and the command to unlock the root account password has been changed.

Environment

Aria Automation 8.17.x

Aria Automation 8.18.x

Cause

With the change in Photon OS version 3 to version 4, which has been introduced in Aria Automation 8.17.x, command to unlock the root account password has been changed.

Resolution

Steps to reset the root account password, please refer How do I reset the root password for VMware Aria Automation

Command to unlock the root account password  for Aria Automation 8.17.x & 8.18.x which leverages Photon OS 4.0

root@vRA01 [ ~ ]# faillock --user root

root@vRA01 [ ~ ]# /usr/sbin/faillock --user root --reset
root@vRA01 [ ~ ]#

Additional Information

For Aria Automation version until 8.16.x, which leverages Photon OS 3.0,please find the command below 

pam_tally2 --reset --user root
