Issue/Introduction

  • Customer has decommissioned a cluster, including the Compute manager.
  • Upgrades to other clusters are not possible due to the status of the decommissioned cluster is not being readable.
  • There won't necessarily be any errors reported.
  • Upgrade will just go into pause due to the missing compute manager.
  • There will likely be a separate warning about the compute manager, status on the decommissioned cluster will be based on last known status.

Environment

VMware NSX-T Data Center

NSX 4.x

Cause

Since NSX cannot communicate with the compute manager, it is unaware of the status of the clusters.  This prevents the removal of NSX from the decommissioned hosts. Without access to the compute manager and the hosts, NSX will pause the upgrade indefinitely.

Resolution

  1. Power on the host with the compute manager on it back up.
  2. Make sure communication is good between the compute manager and NSX, which may require redoing the credentials of the compute manager.
  3. In the NSX UI, go to System->Hosts->Cluster.
  4. Remove (Force Delete) NSX from each host individually until there are no more hosts with NSX listed in the cluster.
  5. Log into the Compute Manager (VCenter), and remove the hosts from the cluster in Vcenter.
  6. Remove the cluster from vCenter.
  7. Delete the Compute manager from NSX.
