Issue/Introduction
Core temperature monitoring is essential for ensuring the optimal performance and longevity of devices. Elevated core temperatures can lead to performance degradation, hardware damage, or system shutdowns if not managed effectively.
Environment
SD-Wan Velocloud Edge All models
Cause
High Workload: Intensive processing tasks increase CPU and system usage, generating excess heat.
Inadequate Cooling: Dust accumulation or malfunctioning cooling systems, such as fans or heat sinks, can lead to insufficient heat dissipation.
Blocked Ventilation: Physical obstructions or poor airflow around the device.
Environmental Factors: Operating in a hot or poorly ventilated environment.
Resolution
Monitor Temperature:
Use logs or system monitoring to track core temperature. From 5.1.0, CPU Core temperature field is added to Monitor -- Edges -- System.
Example log entry:
2024-09-24T07:30:00.012 INFO [5846] CORE.tempv=55.81av=56.25
Maintain Cooling Systems:
Regularly clean fans and heat sinks to ensure unobstructed airflow.
Optimize Environment:
Ensure the device operates in a well-ventilated area with appropriate ambient temperatures.
Manage Workloads:
Distribute workloads to reduce strain on the device.
Avoid prolonged high-CPU tasks without sufficient cooling.
Upgrade Hardware:
Consider additional cooling solutions, such as external fans or liquid cooling systems, if high temperatures persist.
Additional Information
Core Temperature Representation: Measured in degrees Celsius (°C), not as a percentage.
Safe Operating Temperature:
Below 75°C: Normal range.
Above 75°C: Elevated but manageable. Prolonged exposure is not recommended.
Above 95°C: Critical. This can result in thermal throttling or hardware damage. Immediate action is required.
