Issue/Introduction

During Endevor initialization, either batch or foreground, you might eventually observe error messages like:

BC1PFRS1 Product Registration Error RC=0040 RS=0004
BC1PFRS1 Product Registration Error RC=0040 RS=0008
BC1PFRS1 Product Registration Error RC=0016 RS=0016

Only one of the above messages will display. If BSTERR DD is allocated, the message will print there. Otherwise it will print to:

  • JESMSGLG in a batch job
  • JESMSGLG and the user screen (if user runs with TSO PROFILE WTPMSG) in an ISPF run

How to do to correct them?

Environment

Endevor 19.0

Cause

These messages are absolutely harmless. Endevor will keep working normally despite of the messages

The messages arise when an error response is received from the Feature Registration Service (FRS) , a component which is part of Broadcom "Common Components and Services"

There are quite a few possible combinations of return and reason codes. Some of them are documented here.

Resolution

The resolution depends on the combination of return and reason code shown in the message

For combinations not listed here, please contact Technical Support

BC1PFRS1 Product Registration Error RC=0040 RS=0004

This indicates that the Feature Registration Service has not been installed in the system. This feature is installed by Common Components fixes detailed in solution LU04487 and is enabled by running CAS9 started task after IPL

BC1PFRS1 Product Registration Error RC=0040 RS=0008

This indicates that the Feature Registration Service is not available in this system as it is running a Z/OS with a version lower than Z/OS 2.3

There is no way to clear this particular message. It may only be hidden so that it does not show up in the console or in the TSO screen

You need to allocate BSTERR DD so that the message is printed to it, as follows:

  • In a batch job, add //BSTERR DD SYSOUT=* to the JCL
  • In foreground, add command TSO ALLOC FI(BSTERR) SYSOUT(X) to the CLIST that starts the Endevor dialog
  • IMPARTANT: Do not allocate BSTERR DD to DUMMY. This might cause meaningful messages to be lost

BC1PFRS1 Product Registration Error RC=0016 RS=0016

This indicates a mismatch between the parameter list version passed by Endevor and the one supported by the modules installed in common storage

In order to fix this issue, review and apply the PTFs listed in UPGRAD solution LU04487.
Note the installation instructions for each PTF. It might require a LLA refresh and issuing SETPROG command to upgrade the modules in common storage
