Error "invalid postcustomization phase: [failed] for key [guestinfo.cloudinit.target.cluster.unpack.dependencies.status" when creating a Cluster from Tanzu Kubernetes Grid 2.5.2

Issue/Introduction

• After upgrading Container Service Extension Plug-in from 4.2.1 to 4.2.3 , trying to create cluster with template from Tanzu Kubernetes Grid 2.5.2, but cluster fails with error:

"[error while bootstrapping the machine [#####/EPHEMERAL-TEMP-VM]; unable to wait for post customization phase [guestinfo.cloudinit.target.cluster.unpack.dependencies.status] : [invalid postcustomization phase: [failed] for key [guestinfo.cloudinit.target.cluster.unpack.dependencies.status] for vm [EPHEMERAL-TEMP-VM] due to :[ctr image pull projects.registry.vmware.com/$1/$2]]] during cluster creation"

Environment

VMware Cloud Director version 10.5.1.1

VMware Container Service Extension 4.2.1

VMware Container Service Extension Plug-in 4.2.3

Tanzu Kubernetes Grid 2.5.2

Cause

Tanzu Kubernetes Grid 2.5.2 is not supported with VMware Container Service Extension 4.2.1 version.

Resolution

Upgrade to  VMware Container Service Extension 4.2.2 version.

Additional Information

If the Container Service Extension has been updated correctly and the issue still occurs, validate that the DNS settings have been configured on the organization VDC network to permit resolution to the appropriate repositories during deployment:
