In VMware SASE, users may encounter the error message "Failed to upload diagnostic bundle: 'unicode' does not have the buffer interface" when attempting to generate a pcap bundle that includes a packet capture (pcap) on an interface connected to a standby edge device. This issue occurs because diagnostic bundle uploads are limited to the active device, and support for pcaps on standby interfaces was introduced only in version 4.5.2.
Velocloud SDwan Edge version before 4.5.2
Support for pcaps on interfaces connected to standby devices was introduced starting with version 4.5.2. To capture data on standby interfaces, upgrade your edges to version 4.5.2 or later.
To avoid the "Failed to upload diagnostic bundle: 'unicode' does not have the buffer interface" error when performing pcaps on interfaces connected to standby devices:
Verify Interface Configuration:
Check if the pcap is being run on an interface connected to a standby device.
This error arises because the system currently limits diagnostic bundle uploads to the active device's interfaces when the edge version is running less than 4.5.2 version.
Support for pcaps on interfaces connected to standby devices was introduced starting with version 4.5.2. To capture data on standby interfaces, upgrade your edges to version 4.5.2 or later.
For edges below 4.5.2, As a workaround, to perform the pcap on an interface connected to Standby edge user can reach Velocloud Support to help perform the pcap by logging into the CLI. (Contact Broadcom support.)
