Issue/Introduction

Attempts to migrate a VM with a named disk attached through VCDA (VMware Cloud Director Appliance) fail, displaying an error: "Operation aborted due to unexpected error."

Environment

VMware Cloud Director Availability 4.7.x

Cause

VCDA does not support named disks for VM migration. Named disks, a feature of VMware Cloud Director, are designed for organizational administrators or privileged users to create, manage, and update. While these disks can be attached to virtual machines, they are not intended for migration

Resolution

At present, no workaround exists for this limitation. Named disks are not designed for VM migration, as their intended purpose differs from that of standard virtual disks

Additional Information

For more details on the functionality and use cases of named disks, please refer to the official VMware documentation: VMware Cloud Director Tenant Portal Guide - Named Disks
