Steps to Upgrade the Factory Image of a Velocloud Edge

Issue/Introduction

  • The 5.1.0 release introduces the option for Operators to update Factory image(MR) for all physical SD-WAN Edge devices from the Orchestrator UI.

  • The edge must be on at least 5.0.0 before doing the Factory image update.

  • With the 5.2 release, updating the Factory image on High-availability (HA) Edges is supported. The upgrade process is similar to a software update on an HA pair, in that the standby edge will perform the update and reboot, then the active will perform the update and reboot, resulting in a failover.

Resolution

Basic steps to upgrade the Factory Image:

  1. Velocloud support will create a new Software Image / Operator Profile(OP), with the Factory Image update enabled, along with the software image matching the software running on the edges to be updated.
  2. Assign the new Software Image / OP to the edge by browsing in the VECO to Configure > Edges > Select the edge(s) > Click More > Assign Software Image > Select the new Software Image / OP.

 

  • The edge factory image can be updated by assigning a new Software Image (aka Operator Profile(OP)) to an edge.

  • The Software Image / OP should use the exact same software image that the edge is currently running, along with the factory image you wish to upgrade to.  Otherwise if the Software Image is different from what's running on the edge, the edge will update to the new software and the factory image update will not take place.  This is because the edge only updates the software OR factory image when a new Software Image / OP is applied, it doesn't update both.  If this happens, you will need to assign a different Software Image / OP to the edge that has the same software version it's running, so that it doesn't update the software, then assign it back to the Software Image / OP that has the same software plus firmware updates.

  • The Velocloud support team will need to create this Software Image / Operator Profile, and assign it to the Partner and/or Enterprise in the VCO to make it available to assign to edges.

  • Once the factory image update is complete, you may either stay on that Software Image / OP, or assign another Software Image / OP to the edge which contains the same software the edge is already running, so that it won't go through another update.

Below is an example of an Operator Profile with software and factory images enabled.  Assigning this to an edge running that same software image will update it's factory image, note that "Factory Firmware" is the factory software image.
