Issue/Introduction

When performing an NSX upgrade in environments with multiple clusters, the "Include for upgrade" option allows administrators to control which clusters are upgraded in a phased manner. If the option is toggled to exclude a cluster, it may lead to an inability to initiate the NSX Manager upgrade, as this option does not apply to NSX Manager upgrades but rather to cluster-specific upgrades. This can cause the upgrade process to stall, leaving the "Start upgrade" button disabled.

Cause

The issue stems from a misunderstanding of the "Include for upgrade" option. This setting is designed specifically for phased cluster upgrades and does not apply to the NSX Manager upgrade process. The customer's expectation that toggling this option would exclude a cluster from the NSX Manager upgrade was incorrect. Since the option only controls cluster-specific upgrades, it had no impact on the NSX Manager upgrade, causing the process to remain blocked.

 

Resolution

For the NSX Manager upgrade to proceed, all clusters running NSX must first be upgraded to ensure compatibility and prevent any inconsistencies. This misinterpretation of the option's function led to the upgrade stalling, as all clusters need to be upgraded prior to upgrading NSX Manager.
