Issue/Introduction

You see the following error when converting a Virtual Machine from one ESXi host to another ESXi host:

converter.fault.FileIOFault: A file I/O error occurred while accessing ...

or

A general system error occurred: Operation was canceled.

Environment

vCenter Converter Standalone

Cause

Port 902 was not open between the Converter Standalone Server and the destination ESXi host.

Resolution

  1. Validate DNS resolution works for the source and destination ESXi hosts.
  2. Validate that the Converter Standalone Server can reach the source and destination ESXi hosts. (Ping, traceroute, etc.)
  3. Validate that the source VM, source Datastore is accessible from the source ESXi host.
  4. Validate that the destination datastore is accessible from the destination ESXi host.
  5. Validate port requirements as documented TCP/IP and UDP Port Requirements for Conversion
  6. Review logs at the following locations to further root cause the issue:
    %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\
    %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client\
