Issue/Introduction

This article helps in understanding were vCenter tags are located and backup options for this tags.

• vCenter tags are located in the vCenter database as per KB: Tag associations are not removed from vCenter Server database when associated objects are removed or deleted

Environment

Resolution

• Snapshots are not a valid backups in the long term. Snapshots should be removed within 72 hours to avoid becoming stale.
• Configure scheduled file-based backups at least once a week, or daily as this will ensure there is a valid backup (tag) when needed.
• All the data for the embedded platform service controller are stored in the VMDirectory, our local LDAP instance, and is separate to the information from VCDB. Backing up just the VCDB is not recommended. Tags are created in VMDirectory and then assigned to objects in the VCDB.
