Issue/Introduction

  • When trying to mount a datastore via vCenter or Host UI, you see the error "An error occurred during host configuration: .<br/>Operation failed, diagnostics report: Unable to complete Sysinfo operation.  Please see the VMkernel log file for more details.: Read only: VSI node (####:)".
  • In the vmkernel logs of the ESXi host, you may see errors as the example below:

  • The LUN you are trying to use may be a replicated LUN or a new LUN.
    • If replicated LUN, you are receiving the error mentioned above regardless if the task is tried with "Assign new signature" or "Keep existing signature".

Note: The preceding log excerpts are only examples. Date, time, and environmental variables may vary depending on your environment.

Environment

VMware ESXi 7.0.x

VMware ESXi 8.0.x

Cause

The LUN is presented in a "Read-only" mode.

Please note, the LUN has to be in a condition to accept write commands for the ESXi host to be able to mount a datastore from it.

Resolution

Change the presentation mode of the LUN to Read-Write, or the correspondent of this mode in the array in use.

If any assistance is needed to check/change this presentation mode, please engage with your storage vendor.
