Issue/Introduction

Users may encounter an issue when attempting to power on a virtual machine (VM) in VMware vSphere 8.0 U3, receiving the error message:
"The amount of graphics resource available in the parent resource pool is insufficient for the operation."

This issue typically arises due to misconfigured graphics device settings related to Nvidia vGPU memory profiles.

Environment

VMware vSphere 8.0 U3

Cause

This issue often occurs when multiple VMs are configured with Nvidia vGPU profiles.

If one VM is already powered on with a specific vGPU profile, a second VM cannot be powered on with a different profile.

This limitation arises because the available resources in the parent resource pool may not be sufficient to meet the requirements of the new VM, leading to the aforementioned error.

Resolution

By enabling the vGPU Mixed Size Virtual GPU type , issue should be resolved.

Log on to VMware vCenter
Confirm all vGPU enabled Virtual Machines are powered off
Select the host in your inventory
Select the “Configure” tab on the selected host
Navigate to “Graphics” under “Hardware”
Select the GPU from the list, click “Edit”, and change the “vGPU Mode” to “Mixed Size”
