VMware vCenter Server

Issue/Introduction

  • After upgrading or patching vCenter Server to a new release, you may notice different version numbers displayed in the VAMI and the vSphere Client under the "About VMware vSphere" tab.

  • On vCenter Server's VAMI https://<VC_FQDN>:5480 Summary page

  • When looking on vSphere Client under the "About VMware vSphere" tab, we do see a different version of vCenter Server

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.x

VMware vCenter Server 7.x

Cause

This behavior is expected in some of the versions and is not a bug or UI issue, as the Client Package doesn't always receive new code with every release.

Resolution

To confirm the vCenter Server has been patched/updated successfully, ensure the build number is consistent in the following two locations:-

  1. Summary page of VAMI. (URL to access VAMI page should be - https://<vCenter_Server_FQDN>:5480
  2. Open the SSH/Putty for vCenter Server and run the following command to get the build number in the Appliance Shell:
    • vpxd -vl
