Issue/Introduction

There’s a Windows 10 22H2 system that’s having trouble running the software inventory.  Running AppScanner is similar to running powershell Get-AppxPackage.  In this case, the powershell command is also taking very long to run (more than 8 hours).  This results in Inventory Failure, and no data is sent to the SMP.

 

Errors in the logs (and color to indicate Error / Warning / Info):

AppxScanner.exe failed to complete within 1 minute. Killing the running process 2656 

AppxScanner.exe was successfully terminated

Finished in 60.165710 seconds, 0, components found. Mode = Scanner87Plus

Software Inventory Scan Failed

Unhandled exception has occured., COM error: Unspecified error (0x80004005)

Inventory Agent has finished gathering inventory with few errors. Please refer to the logs for details

Failed to gather inventory.

Environment

8.7.2 and previous versions may have this issue where Inventory is not sent to the SMP

Resolution

8.7.3 has been changed to send Gathered inventory to the SMP when Inventory fails on an individual component.  So if AppXScanner is killed, and other inventory process are able to gather inventory, the Agent will send that inventory to the SMP.  Of course AppXScanner data may not be included since that process didn't complete, but other inventory will populate in the database.
