External Backup to Azure blob storage fails on NSX and SDDC

Issue/Introduction

  • When attempting to do a backup to an Azure blob storage, it fails from SDDC or NSX with a similar error:

  • Following log lines observed in NSX Manager logs:
    • syslog.log

NSX 77139 SYSTEM [nsx@6876 audit="true" comp="nsx-manager" level="INFO" subcomp="manager"] UserName:'....................' ModuleName:'backup-restore' Operation:'PUT@/api/v1/cluster/backups/config' Operation status: 'failure' Error: Authentication failed on fileserver

org.springframework.web.client.HttpClientErrorException$Unauthorized: 401 Unauthorized: [no body]

Environment

  • VMware NSX
  • VMware SDDC Manager

Cause

This issue is due to insufficient permissions from the Azure Blob Storage to be able to create the backup files.

Resolution

  • Login into the Azure blob and look at the permission under Edit local user  and confirm that we have all the permission selected  here is a sample on how it should looked:
