Issue/Introduction

A Virtual Edge deployed on Azure with Accelerated Networking may experience multiple Dataplane Service failures and become unable to pass traffic after upgrading to Release 5.4.0.1. The Edge enters an unusable state that cannot be recovered.

Environment

  • VMware SASE 5.4.0.1
  • Azure Cloud
  • Virtual Edge with Accelerated Networking enabled

Cause

When an Azure Virtual Edge with Accelerated Networking is upgraded to Release 5.4.0.1, it triggers a bug (ID: 143551) that leads to Dataplane Service failures. The service restarts three times in succession before stopping entirely. A reboot does not resolve the issue, and the Edge remains unable to pass traffic.

The root cause is improper support for Azure Accelerated Networking in Release 5.4.0.1.

Resolution

  • There is no workaround for this issue.
  • Customers with an Azure Virtual Edge using Accelerated Networking should not upgrade to Release 5.4.0.1.
  • For customers who have already upgraded and are experiencing this issue, the recommended next step is to redeploy the Virtual Edge from the Azure Marketplace using the 5.0.1 release.

The issue is documented under internal ID 143551.

More details can be found in the VMware SASE 5.4.0.1 Release Notes.
