Issue/Introduction

  • The command df -h on vCenter server shows the root partition at 100%: 

  • vCenter services may fail to start

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 6.5.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.7.x
VMware vCenter Server 7.x
VMware vCenter Server 8.x
VMware vCenter Server 9.0.x

Cause

  • Multiple files such as .cer files during auto-deploy process may be saved in the /var/tmp folder
  • Old log bundles may be present on the system

Resolution

Take a snapshot of the vCenter server.

1. Identify large files:
find / -type f -size +100000k -exec ls -lh {} \; | awk '{ print $9 ": " $5 }'

2. Remove large files, unused log bundles, crash dump files, and other unneeded files as needed 

3. Restart vCenter services
service-control --stop --all && service-control --start --all

3. Validate the available space of the root partition:
df -h
