Unable to backup database during upgrade of VMware Cloud Director appliance

Issue/Introduction

During an upgrade there is an error: Failed to obtain current webserver certificate ID.

Details in the cell-runtime.log read: column cells.webserver_cert_consumer_id does not exist

Cause

The issue is due to the order of operations. Backing up the database should be done prior to updating the appliance. After the appliance has been updated the database schema is expected to be updated as well.

Resolution

Backup the database manually using pg_dump or rollback the upgrade and backup prior to running the appliance upgrade steps. Ensure that the database upgrade is ran with:
/opt/vmware/vcloud-director/bin/upgrade
