Configure ICMP Probe for business policy on SD-WAN edge

Issue/Introduction

This article introduces configuration of ICMP probe for business policy and the function provided.

Environment

VMware VeloCloud SD-WAN all supported releases.

Resolution

1.  Created a ICMP probe which is tracking the reachability to a remote IP address.
   
2. Configure a business policy, IP version must be IPv4, Network Service must be Direct, Link Steering must be Interface, ICMP probe can only be enabled when above options being selected.
   
3. Link Policy can be selected as Preferred or Available. If Mandatory is selected, flow switchover will not happen.

 

When an application flow hits the business policy, the probe will start to track the remote destination IP. The function is to monitor the direct connectivity from selected interface to a remote address (probe destination address). If it is not reachable, then the flow will switch from direct to multipath(overlay) so that it will be sent to the gateway(VCG), after then gateway will NAT the source IP address as its public address and send out from gateway's public interface. When probe is reachable again, the new flows will be sent to direct.
