Issue/Introduction

When generating a Java web service client from the Identity Manager (TEWS) service URL, the generated code may contain compilation errors. Specifically, expected Java objects are replaced by javax.xml.soap.SOAPElement data types, which are incompatible with existing source code that relies on the correct object structure.

Environment

Identity Manager 14.5

IBM  Rational Application Developer tool

Cause

This issue occurs because of incompatible settings within the IBM Rational Application Developer (RAD) tool when generating the web service client. The tool defaults to generic SOAPElement types during the WSDL import process instead of successfully mapping the schema definition to the corresponding Java objects defined in the TEWS WSDL.

Resolution

  1. Configure Client Generation Settings: In IBM Rational Application Developer, ensure your client generation configuration is set to use the standard JAX-WS runtime rather than legacy or IBM-specific SOAP settings.
  2. Verify WSDL Import: Ensure the TEWS WSDL URL is accessible and that the tool correctly validates the schema during the import phase.
  3. Regenerate Client:
    • Delete the previously generated, non-functional classes.
    • Run the "Generate Client" wizard again, selecting the corrected configuration settings that enforce proper Java object mapping.
    • Verify that the resulting classes (e.g., ModifyBPSearch) use the specific generated types rather than javax.xml.soap.SOAPElement.
  4. Confirm Compilation: Compile the project to confirm that the Java objects are correctly recognized and that the compilation errors are resolved.
