Issue/Introduction

ESXi was rebooted due to an IERR signal interrupt that is observed in the IPMI sel logs.

Environment

ESXi 6.x.

ESXi 7.x.

ESXi 8.x.

Cause

ESXi host was rebooted due to a component that triggered the IERR signal being sent on the Hardware side which indicates a catastrophic error reported by the processor which is generally caused by devices outside of the processor core.

From the IPMI sel logs we will see a similar event:

From the ESXi host logs navigate to the commands folder in the ESXi host log bundle: less commands/localcli_hardware-ipmi-sel-list--p--i--n-all.txt

Resolution

The ESXi host is experiencing a hardware-related issue, likely caused by a faulty processor.

Contact your hardware vendor and conduct thorough hardware diagnostics on the ESXi host. If the diagnostics reveal a faulty processor or other hardware component, it will need to be replaced to resolve the issue.
